Commissioning a Portrait
The process of painting a commissioned work can be varied. Outlined below is a typical scenario that may be anticipated upon beginning the portrait.
- An initial meeting to discuss the specific aspects of the portrait. As this is a collaborative effort I seek to gather as much input from the client with regard to clothing, setting and background as possible. To see where the finished painting is to hang and what style of frame are other details which can be discussed at this time. Specific pricing adjustments from the base price will be forwarded at this time if necessary. A contract will be forwarded to the client after this initial meeting and once received a date and schedule will be determined. Due to the geographic limitations of the initial meeting, clients residing outside a 75 mile travel radii may require modifying some aspects of this process.
- A 2-3 hour sitting is now required. I will take photographs of the one or more poses which we have discussed. If possible, I will make color notations from life on a canvas study. From this session I will forward a small color study painting and support photographs (if necessary) for approval.
- The final painting is now begun. Once the face, hands are complete and the painting is overall 85% complete a preapproval is sought to make any small adjustments. Geographic limitations may restrict this to emailed digital photographs.
- Once complete a final approval is sought. Final payment is required before delivery or shipment.

Above pricing is for the figure and plain background. Additional elements will affect pricing and will be forwarded after the initial meeting.
Framing is additional. I am happy to coordinate the purchase with the client.
All additional costs of travel, hotel, taxes (if applicable) and shipping are billable and due prior to delivery.
½ of the agreed upon price is due with the signed contract. Final payment and billable costs due prior to delivery of painting.
